Call For Translators: Zenphoto Becomes International!

We’ve finally managed to implement localization for Zenphoto! Translation capability is now available in the 1.1.6 release. The current implementation requires the native gettext extension installed in the PHP on your server. We hope later to add a workaround for those without native gettext. But we believe (and hope) most servers will have gettext installed by default. There may be still some glitches, so we are dependend on you to report problems on our forums.

The first language available is German, since one of our developers is German. German will be a standard language and will be developer maintained. But of course any feedback about typos or other errors is appreciated.

And for all non-German speakers, so that no one feels excluded: The German translation uses are more distanced, polite form (“Sie”) to adress the user because this seemed more fitting especially if Zenphoto is used professionally. I personally prefer that software remains a little formal. Anyone who prefers the more friendly adress form (“Du”) is invited to submit an alternative translation. There is room for two or more versions (and of course bugreports are welcome, too…:-)) – Acrylian.

Of course we are not satisfied and want more. Many more, in fact the more the better! So you all are invited to provide translations. We have assembled a translation tutorial for you to explain a few things and make it easier. Please take the time to read it (even if you know how to work with gettext) to avoid unnecessary work! Thanks!

I have started localization to Slovak language and after two evenings I have translated 75% of all strings used in 1.1.6. This time I need everyone who is better in finding typos than me :) You can find my translation in trac and it is updated every evening.

Big thanks goes to everyone from zenphoto team for making an outstanding application and still making it better!

Wow, this is huge!! Getting the right gallery for your site is great, but when you want to share your photos globally, you don’t have much choice. I’ve been putting images on Google Earth, but having the translation features in Zen Photo is unbelievable. This puts the gallery one step closer to better global colaboration. Keep up the great work.

    Hi,

I’ve just finalised a transalation for Zenphoto 1.2.3 into Finnish (zenphoto.mo/po). It seems only the text “DESCRIPTION” does not translate when viewing (in any language). Seemed to work ok in other respects. I’m setting up a localized version, where I try and use also a localized version of Stopdesign theme; have a look at http://www.tiirikainen.fi/wordpress/zenphoto/.

Some of this translation is based on the orginal translation by Antti Ruonakoski – so thanks a lot for that.

Due to some complications I’ve not been able to register as an official translator, but try and do that soonest so that the localization becomes available to all users.

We have not really a registration for “official translators”. You just need to register to post tickets.

We also recommend to join the google translation group to discuss translation issues (I don’t know which “description” you mean actually). You also could use the forum for these kind of questions. We do not read comments that frequently as we do the forum.

Also sorry to say, your translation will be outdated very soon as we are about to release 1.2.4 and quite a few things changed. Early announcements of release schedules are another benefit of the the google translation group.
