Zenphoto Roadmap

Note: As a preface, this is an April Fool’s joke. Zenphoto is as active as ever, and we hope to keep making it even better.

With the release of our latest version, Zenphoto 1.2.4, and the perfection, stability and widespread use of our amazing software, we thought it would be a great time to discuss the schedule for Zenphoto. Here’s a general idea of what we expect for the year ahead.

Our plan is for a final point release in one or two months, as per our usual schedule. This will probably come around May or June 1st, and will be version 1.2.5.

This will be Zenphoto’s final release. We’ve decided that our software is decidedly feature complete and 100% working for its intended purpose. If we continue adding features, we will be going against our philosophy of bloat-free, simple photo software, and at some point we simply have to call it finished. With all due respect, Zenphoto has gone as far as it can with its current codebase.

This is why we believe that for all our users, moving to the Gallery project will be an excellent and logical option. The Gallery software has two more full-number versions than Zenphoto, and on the new third version, Gallery 3, they’ve finally realized everything that Zenphoto was from the beginning. With many years more experience than our team, we have every reason to believe they will be able to make a better gallery than Zenphoto ever was or will be.

After all, zenphoto was originally conceived as a replacement for gallery software like Coppermine and Gallery 1 and 2 which were large bloated applications full of features that displayed your photos and did your dishes too! We basically designed Zenphoto to be everything we desired in a “Gallery 3.” But now that the Gallery team is making “Gallery 3″ for real, like we always wanted – a simple, usable, and lightweight photo gallery designed for simply showing photos – Zenphoto’s “raison d’être” is no more! We’d like to thank the Gallery team for taking over all this hard work for us.

All the members of our team look forward to having much more time to enjoy on beautiful beaches in Hawaii and the Italian riviera, funded of course by the tens of millions of dollars in donations we’ve received from our generous users. Thanks to all of our users, and… ciao!

Gallery3 – just like Coppermine – can cook french (liberty or whatever) fries too.
    And what about Zenphoto ?

    Well, I can’t hear you…

(Stephen, I noticed that using the last ZP release, if you click on the tag “Autobaaaaaaaaaaaaahnnnnnnnnn” and then perform a free search from the page result with the words “shall we die one of these days ?” we get a beautiful easter egg. Good job !)

I have to rank this as one of the best April Fool’s jokes this year. My heart literally sank when I saw the announcement. I just discovered and started using Zenphoto about 2 weeks ago (coming from Gallery2) – and I LOVE it!! Keep up the good work guys and please don’t scare me like that again.

  17. Cristi April 2nd, 2009 5:31 am

I hope that is not true, I love that gallery. It became popular on the blogs. I hope that my work was not in vain. Not abandoned ZENPhoto!

  18. aruze April 2nd, 2009 6:32 am

I love Zenphoto. I’ve tried Gallery2 but it isn’t lite. Zenphoto is lite and comfortable . I hope it’s not true.

  19. Tristan April 2nd, 2009 8:32 am

It most certainly was a joke, glad everyone enjoyed it. :)

  20. Samy April 2nd, 2009 8:49 am

Your 1st of april big fish was successful, guys :)

  21. Cristi April 2nd, 2009 9:21 am

Well, if it is just a trick I’m not upset. Now we have updated the gallery to the latest version and I hope you can use a long time from now on. Thank those who created it and want a pleasant vacation … :)

  22. Chuck April 2nd, 2009 11:13 am

    Ahhhhh got me Good !!

I was actually depressed last night. I just stumbled upon Zen Photo a week ago and finally got it to integrate with the look and feel of my site (I’m not good w/CSS) and then I read your posting…. I almost cried.

    Thank Goodness it’s a prank.

I tried playing around with Gallery before and gave up. This is sooooo much nicer and easier to understand. !!!!

  23. G. April 3rd, 2009 5:08 am

I really fell on this joke!!
I was starting to panic when I read the last line =)

  24. amy April 4th, 2009 12:37 pm

    Ummmm,
I read this on April 4 and naturally ;-) didn’t read all the way through before I spent a bunch of time reading through the Gallery site trying to decide if I needed to jump ship before I launch the site I’m working on.
Thankfully, I decided not to and came back and re-read this post…

Now that April 1st has passed – you might want to edit this so the joke is revealed at the beginning…

  25. Andy April 16th, 2009 10:46 pm

Gallery developer here. Why is this an April fool’s joke? It makes so much sense.

Just kidding :) Seriously, we need good alternatives to keep innovating. And ZenPhoto sure keeps us on our toes. Similarly, ZenPhoto would be in a bad position if there was no other real alternative.

So congrats to a great product and thanks for including Gallery in your April fool’s. :)

  26. Tristan April 17th, 2009 9:32 am

Thanks Andy! I was actually delighted to hear about Gallery3 and I’m truly glad that you’ve decided to cut it down to size and simplify. You’ve got a great extensible product there, and as always, we appreciate the competition. Alternatives are always a good thing to have, so we cover everyone’s needs. Best of luck with the new product :)

“This is a beginning of a beautiful friendship.” :D

  28. deep May 3rd, 2009 11:24 am

I prefer ZENphoto to gallery 3.0

  29. sunix May 6th, 2009 3:08 pm

    Keep GOING! never stop!
To be the best and simple software
