zenphoto1.1 is here

New in 1.1: Sub-albums, tags, searching, RSS feeds, EXIF/IPTC support, Video support, plugins, comment sp@m filtering, geospatial visualization, image archives, and more…much more. Yep, it’s all there!

Version 1.1.7: This release includes many bug fixes from 1.1.6, with improvements especially in the localization libraries and translations.

Want to influence what goes in the next version? Visit the news page and vote on your favorite new feature. Or if you don’t find you favorite feature there, create a feature request ticket on the trac.

Quick Upgrade Steps

  1. Important note: In 1.1 and later, the /zen directory has been renamed
to /zp-core. Keep that in mind if upgrading from versions prior to 1.1.
  2. Delete your old copy of the zenphoto files (the zp-core and themes folders.) Be sure to keep your zp-config.php file or at lease make note of the MySQL information in it.
  3. Extract the contents of the archive and upload all the files to your web site directory.
  4. Make sure the .htaccess file is writeable.
  5. Navigate to the visit your gallery url EXAMPLE: www.yoursite.org/zenphoto/, now setup.php should run automatically. (If it somehow does not please navigate directly to www.yoursite.org/zenphoto/zp-core/setup.php.)
  6. Make sure everything checks out, and click go!

zenphoto

web2.0 awards honorarable mentionZenphoto is an answer to lots of calls for an online gallery solution that just makes sense. After years of bloated software that does everything and your dishes, zenphoto just shows your photos, simply. It’s got all the functionality and “features” you need, and nothing you don’t. Where the old guys put in a bunch of modules and junk, we put a lot of thought. We hope you agree with our philosopy: simpler is better. Don’t get us wrong though –zenphoto really does have everything you need for your online gallery, and you’ll even stare in awe at some of the innovative innovations we innovated upon. Here are some of the wonderful things about it:

Features

  • Internationalization/localization
  • Plugin system
  • Slideshow
  • Automatically generated thumbnails and sized-down images
  • Upload via FTP or via the admin interface
  • Upload images, albums (folders) or even zip-archives
  • Comments on images and albums with powerful spam filters
  • AJAX-powered edit-while-you-browse
  • Sub albums
  • Video support for Flash Video (.flv), MPEG4 (.mp4), Quicktime (.mov) and 3GP (.3gp)
  • Audio support for MP3 and MP4
  • Password protection for gallery and albums
  • EXIF and IPTC support
  • Watermarks for images
  • Powerful search with boolean expressions
  • Tags: Categorize you images with tags
  • Image and album rating
  • Dynamic albums: Generate albums from searches!
  • Highly customizable theme engine
  • rss for gallery, albums and comments
  • Multiple administrative users with varying rights
  • Cruft free, search engine friendly URLs with mod_rewrite

That’s just the beginning. There’s lots more in store for zenphoto in the future, as you can see in the roadmap. Major plans include native WordPress integration (in many sexy ways), sorting by dragging around the little thumbnail thingies, EXIF/IPTC, RSS, Plugin API, Searching, Password protection (done) custom dynamic and user-defined groupings, localization, and even more! Keep checking back for news and new versions. Sound good? Take a look at the demo and see for yourself.

Development

zenphoto was started in May of 2005 with a published specification on a weblog (trisweb.com), and each version saw dozens of comments leading to revision of the spec and more ideas for subsequent versions. It was a fruitful and enjoyable development process that is not even close to being finished. If you’d like to participate, please visit the message boards and introduce yourself, or just start submitting patches on the bug tracker.

In September 2007, members of the Zenphoto community began improving Zenphoto and making a ‘community build’ that included many new features and fixes, since the development had stalled for over six months. The community build was then merged into the Zenphoto codebase and development continued with a core team of developers and contributors. Finally, on November 2nd 2007 Zenphoto 1.1 was released, including many new features and improvements.

We now have an excellent team of developers working on the project and development is much more active than in the past. Thank you to all those responsible for the 1.1 release and continued development of Zenphoto.
